Pump it Up with the Viair 88P!

Streaming Airheads

We recently purchased a Viair 88P portable air compressor.  I’m wondering what took us so long to get one of these little compressors, as it’s a great companion for our RV travels.  Here is a review of this handy tool.

About the Viair 88P

The Viair 88P is a 12-volt air compressor and is reported to be able to fill up to a 33-inch tire. I have no doubts it can do so.  As soon as I unboxed the 88P, I knew it was a nice little tool to have. The 88P cost is a little over $60 on Amazon.

It comes with clamps that make it easy to attach it to a battery, a couple of air filling attachments, and hose that screws on to a tire’s air stem.  The Viair 88P’s maximum pressure is 120 PSI.  It will pump a tire from 0 to 30 PSI in 2 ½ minutes!

Trial Run

So yesterday, when I went to get the big Diesel Grasshopper mower out of the garage, I noticed the rear tires were low on air. Let me tell you just how dandy it was to take this little 12-volt compressor, clamp it to the battery on the Grasshopper and go right around to all the tires and fill them up in no time flat (pun intended).

There’s even a gauge on the 88P. I found that while running it does not give a correct air pressure PSI while in the process of filling the tire, but when you switch the little machine off, voila!… you have an accurate read of the pressure in the tire right there on the gauge. I even double checked it with a digital PSI gauge that I keep in the truck and both gauges had the same reading.

How easy is that? I do have a big Craftsman air compressor and I can run air tools and do all sorts of stuff with it, but it doesn’t fit under the back seat of our Ford F150 Crew Cab like this little beauty.

Many Uses

Now when travelling with our Shining Hope, if we have a flat tire on the truck, the spare is low on air, or our bike tires need topping off, it’s no problem as we can fill it up on the spot. Likewise, If Hope’s tires are low on air, whether on the road or in our storage space, we can fill them up right where she sits!  In addition, we figure the Viair 88P can even help us to blow out our lines and winterize our unit when traveling, if needed.

Having a little longer hose for this unit might be nice, but I’m not too concerned with that. We can connect the little air compressor to the Airstream’s batteries, the truck, or even another vehicle if one’s available. Maybe someday I’ll extend the length of the air hose, or just use jumper cables to get some extra length by attaching the 88P’s clamps to the cables, then to the truck battery.

Recommendation

This is probably one of the best little tools I’ve added to my repertoire of on the road necessities. Truly, I got a big smile when I filled those mower tires, as it was quick and easy. I highly recommend this little compressor, its portable, and the ease with which it fills a tire is simply amazing.  I’m just tickled pink to have this little Viair 88P.  Find it on Amazon here.

How about you?  How do you fill your tires on the road?  Please comment below – we’d love to hear from you!

  1. The Viair 90p we have is fantastic. The only downfall we have found is that it draws 23amps max. Thst amount of power can draw down your vehicle battery if you use the pump without the vehicle running.

    1. Thanks for that tip. Definitely want to be sure we don’t replace one problem (flat tire) with another (dead battery)!
