Why I Love to Airstream with My Kindle

Until I retired last Fall, I didn’t have much time for reading. I liked the idea of it but never had the time. Or worse yet, I’d sit down to read a book and my mind began to drift off to the hundreds of other things I should be doing instead. But now that I am blissfully retired, I make time to spend with a good book – guilt-free. And, I Airstream with my Kindle!

Friends who are avid readers shudder at the thought of a Kindle. They cry, “I like to hold the book in my hands and feel the pages as I turn them,” or “I love to smell the book.” Okay, I get it – well, maybe everything except sniffing your book. But there are many advantages to Kindle reading, especially for those traveling in Airstreams or RVs.

Kindles are light and compact. I can literally carry hundreds of books with me when we are on the road. I can tote my Kindle in my purse, making it convenient to catch up on my reading while riding in the passenger seat, waiting for an appointment, or dining in a restaurant. My Kindle is waterproof – I can take it to the beach without worrying about getting it wet. Better yet, Paperwhite Kindles offer antiglare screens that read like actual paper, even in the bright sunlight. Kindles are lightweight, so you can read while holding them with one hand. I really love this, as I usually munch and read! I can read in bed using my Kindle without disturbing Major Airhead, using the Kindle’s adjustable backlight. And probably the thing I love most about using a Kindle is that when I get the urge to read a good book, I can download and begin reading within minutes from the comfort of my home…or Airstream. In short, I love my Kindle!

If you are an Amazon Prime member, you have access to many free kindle books. And you might be surprised to know that your local library may also lend e-books free of charge! I take advantage of these free programs whenever I can. For binge readers, Kindle Unlimited is an affordable way to access more than two million digital titles, browse a selection of up to three popular monthly magazine subscriptions, and enjoy an audible narrative that allows you to listen to your book while on the go! There are flexible subscription plans available – and even free trial options!

There are some really cool and helpful features in a Kindle that you need to know about! For example, If you stumble upon a word and you don’t know its meaning, you simply hold your finger on the word, and a dictionary definition pops up. You can highlight passages to refer to later, and you can also make notes for future reference. If you forget who a character in the book is, simply press your finger on the name, and Kindle will remind you of their relevance to the storyline. You can change the font size to one that’s easy on your eyes.

While you need to be connected to WiFi to download books to your Kindle, you don’t have to be connected to read them. The Kindle has an extremely long battery life. I can go weeks without recharging via USB. Boondocking with your Kindle is no problem!
