Hilton Head, Gators, and Ibis Pond

Me: GATOR!

Libby: WHERE? (stopping to look)

Me: (Whispering sternly) Keep walkin’, keep walkin’, keep walkin’….

Though a little one it was, I could only envision a mother close by!  It was the day before the alligator sighting that I discovered Pinkney Island. I walked a good part of it, but the main attraction came early…..Ibis Pond. This pond is loaded, and I mean, LOADED with shore birds, Ibis, and who knows what else.  Being a Pennsylvania boy I can identify ruffed grouse, pileated woodpeckers and such, but as to shore birds I claim no fame. And, of course, there are the obligatory signs warning of gators! So I just had to take my lovely wife back there and indeed we did a nice little hike together. This is a great place for bike riding, hiking, photography, meditation, dehydration and sunburn. It can be warm in Hilton Head in June so, I highly recommend taking water, sunscreen, and…watch your step.

We made the trip to Hilton Head Harbor RV resort and Marina from our home in Gettysburg, PA, doing an overnight at VanHoy Farms Family Campground on the way down, (where there was some sort of Medieval festival going on) and Fort Chiswell RV park on the way back. All campgrounds were just fine, but Hilton Head Harbor we found to be just the most wonderful place to stay. We highly recommend it!  You should have seen the look on Libby’s face when, having been told to take the golf cart and ride around to pick out a site. I said to her, “you’re drivin’!” Well, neither of us had ever driven a golf cart before, what a hoot that was, and we quickly picked out a waterfront site, hurried back to the office, and booked it for the week……NICE!

Libby’s sister lives in Beaufort, SC (about 30 minutes north) and she visited for a time, spending the night in the airstream, and the two ladies went out and about on Hilton Head shopping the day I went over to Pinkney Island.

Hilton Head Sunrise

Libby and I had a very relaxing time, you know, beach, sand, water, waves, and metal detecting. I tend to swing a detector when I get the chance, but have yet to discover the lost treasures of Atlantis, though I must say I do have quite an extensive collection of goodies I’ve dug over the past couple years.

If you get to Hilton Head Island someday, don’t miss Shelter Cove. They had a fireworks night, I think it was Wednesday, and the place was packed with people, along with a carnival like atmosphere, zipline, food vendors, glow lights, and all other sort and manner of stuff going on.

There are several public access areas to the beach – we liked Bradley Beach Road. A good bit of the island consists of gated communities with no access though. I have to give a big thank you to the First Baptist Church for granting me parking so I could access the beach at Alder Lane.

Lastly, don’t forget to try out Hudson’s Seafood House as we thought it was a pretty good restaurant, though there may be a wait time involved.

This may be our favorite place in the South for years to come.  How about you?  What’s your favorite warm weather get-a-way?  Share your comments below.
